Momma B's

Momma B's

Momma Mia! Here I go again. My my, how can I resist you.

We got a hot lead on a little-known pizzeria north of Detroit, serving up specialty vegan pizzas, apps and desserts. No arm twisting involved, we could not get to Momma B’s in Shelby Township fast enough!

While we had heard great things about their vegan offerings, we were *blown away* by all the vegan awesomeness that we uncovered on their website. And when I say blown away, I mean it took me 30 minutes of contemplation to whittle down the vegan specialty pizza menu alone. Really, who could even choose between Cheeseburger pizza and one called the Coach Potato? Not us and so naturally, we ordered both. Along with a BBQ Chicken pizza and Greek salad. Please allow me the opportunity to break down each of these delights.

BBQ Chicken Pizza: As the name suggests, this is a sweet meets salty extravaganza of flavor. The BBQ sauce lent just enough sweetness to intrigue our palate, while not being a total flavor bully. The chicken was also complimented by French’s fried onions, so while this may not be the healthiest pie around but it sure was fab on the tastebuds! So much so that my vegetarian child, who on stubborn teen principle alone usually refuses to eat vegan cheese, absolutely devoured it. No really, I had to practically throw an elbow to get a second piece!

Coach Potato: They had me at tater tots. And jalapeños. And buffalo sauce. And vegan ranch. Seriously, not sure who invented this but I’m pretty sure it went something like this: “Hey, let’s put all of our favorite vegan, decadent toppings on a pizza with chicken, bacon and cheese. And then let’s name it after our motivation level after we crush the entire pie.” We loved. Our only request? More tots on our next order!

Cheeseburger pizza: If a vegan Big Mac and a vegan pizza had a baby, this would be it. We went with extra pickles, because why not, and found it the perfect blend of burger and pizza. So if you can’t decide what to order tonight, maybe compromise with this best-of-both-worlds pie.

Greek salad: I know what you are thinking. Who cares about a salad when we ordered a veritable smorgasbord of vegan pies. Well, I have always been a firm believer that Greek salad is the near-perfect accompaniment to pizza. There’s something about its freshness and salty toppings that bring out the cheesy carby-ness (that’s technical term ) of pies. And Momma’s Greek delivered this in spades. Perfectly proportioned toppings (including vegan feta!) served with a flavor-filled Greek dressing made this salad the icing on the proverbial cake.

Ranch dressing: Ever in search of elusive tasty vegan ranch dressings, we ordered a side to try. (We routinely dip our pizza crusts in ranch, please try if you haven’t already!) Michael, who packaged our eats, mentioned that this ranch was the real deal – so much so that most employees at Momma B’s prefer this homemade vegan ranch to its dairy counterpart. Michael, in addition to being warm and friendly, is a man of his word! This creamy dressing was bursting with warm flavors and a plethora of tasty seasonings. My only regret was not buying more!

But wait, there’s more! I know, like we need another reason to pledge our allegiance to Momma B’s!?? But yes, they offer house-made vegan desserts like mini chocolate silk pies and truffles. Michael, my new bestie, even offered me a complimentary truffle to celebrate our inaugural visit.  [Tears of joy.]  Its smoothness and richness provided the perfect sweet bite follow-up to our pizza party!

So let me try to summarize. Killer vegan pizza that even a dairy-loving teen devours. Homemade sweets. Darling staffers. Yup, that’s a TVM trifecta folks!
